Different Types of Ointments for Wounds

In general, ointments for wounds are divided into two types, namely antiseptics and antibiotics. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The following are some of the most commonly used antiseptic and antibiotic ointments for wounds:

1. Povidone iodine (Betadine)

Povidone iodine ointment has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties that function to inhibit bacterial development so that the risk of infection in wounds can be suppressed. This ointment can be purchased at pharmacies without a doctor's prescription and is commonly used for various types of minor injuries, including cuts, cuts, and burns. You need to use this ointment according to the instructions for use listed on the product packaging. Ointments are applied after the wound is cleaned and generally done three times a day. Povidone iodine ointment is only used for external wounds and not for long-term use without a doctor's examination.

2. Cadexomer iodine (Iodosorb)

Cadexomer iodine is an antiseptic agent commonly used in wound care. These ointments generally have lower iodine levels, which is about 4%, compared to povidone iodine with iodine levels of 10%. In general, the benefits and methods of using cadexomer and povidone iodine are the same. However, cadexomer iodine is more effective in treating old wounds, while povidone iodine is superior in dealing with new wounds.

3. Bacitracin

Bacitracin is an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment. Ointments can be used for abrasions, cuts, and minor burns. Slightly different from antiseptic ointments, antibiotic ointments not only inhibit bacterial development but also stop it. This ointment needs to be used according to the instructions on the product packaging or doctor's advice. You are not advised to apply this ointment more, longer, and more often than recommended, because it will make the wound heal longer and actually increase the risk of side effects, such as itching.

4. Neosporin

Neosporin is an ointment for wounds with three types of antibiotic content, namely bacitracin, neomycin, and polymixin. Not only does it stop the development of bacteria in the wound, this combination ointment also kills the bacteria in the wound. This ointment can kill more bacteria than ointments containing only one type of antibiotic, such as bacitracin. This ointment is used in the same type of wound and condition as bacitracin, and both are quite safe to use in most people. Even so, neosporin is more at risk of causing allergic reactions because it contains the antibiotic neomycin.

5. Silver sulfadiazine

Silver sulfadiazine is also used for wound ointments, especially moderate and severe burns. This substance is an antibiotic drug and serves to stop the growth of bacteria that can cause infections. Silver sulfadiazine ointment can only be obtained by prescription from a doctor. Apart from being in the form of ointments, your doctor may also give you this medicine in the form of a pad, because it is more practical to use. When injured, it is important to take proper care. Ointments can be used if indeed the condition of a dirty wound and risk of infection. However, if the wound looks swollen, itchy, and pain like burning, or if the wound does not improve after being given an ointment, immediately consult a doctor.
